This Week’s Movie Monday: Girls Trip Review

Some Spoilers.

Here we are again for another marvellous Movie Monday. Girls Trip is a 2017 comedy starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pickett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish and Kate Walsh. It is directed by Malcolm D Lee.

Best friends Ryan, Sasha, Lisa and Dina are in for the adventure of a lifetime when they travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Along the way, they rekindle their sisterhood and rediscover their wild side by doing enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

Girls Trip follows the college group, self named the “Flossy Posse” on a 48 hour reunion weekend. The weekend addresses many issues that women and friendship groups alike face including cheating, eviction, business failure and the pressures of motherhood.

At the time of writing this movie has the these ratings:

  • IMDb: 7.1/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 88%
  • Metacritic: 72%

The premise of this move might seem very predictable but this genre is given new life thanks to a cast of talented individuals. I found myself laughing at the smallest of things throughout the movie, more than I have laughed at a comedy movie since Bridesmaids.

My favourite scene is torn between the absinthe induced hallucination scene

and this:

The character that out shines any other is Tiffany Haddish playing Dina, the fierce friend who doesn’t hold back – even if she maybe should. Yes the movie follows the same tropes as other movies in this genre. The reunion, the crazy party followed by the argument and the eventual friendship make-up.

I’ve seen some comments online about this movie being a girls only movie yet I’ve seen plenty on men loving this as much as I did. So couples, lads, women and non-binary folk will find humour in this movie, I’m sure of it.

I laughed like a seal and thoroughly enjoyed the development and antics of each character. I found myself identifying with each of the women and that made the movie even more the better for its ability to be relatable.

Girls Trip is a must watch! Go to the cinema and laugh a little. It is good for your health and it’s a great way to hit up your own (girl)friends.

One word review: hilarious

Rating: 4/5
